ReCommon Reflections - October 2024

ReCommon Reflections

October 2024

Hello ReCommon Community 👋 Welcome to the October edition of ReCommon Reflections. Updates include: a recap of the impact summit in NYC, an enDAOment from Regen Foundation, larger shifts at ReCommon and updates to our website. Let's dive in!

1. Transformative Impact Summit NYC - Talk on YouTube

This past Sunday, Alex spoke at the Transformative Impact Summit in NYC, a three-day event focused on ecological, social, technological, and economic impact. Alex’s talk, titled Building Bioregional Commons: Governance and Impact Mapping, took the audience on a quick tour of ReCommon’s journey, exploring what it takes to build a bioregional commons.

As we see it, a bioregional commons of land, stewarded for and by the community, is an ideal alternative to the extractive, destructive, and outdated forms of land tenure currently in place. These outdated systems give rise to the various social and ecological crises we face today.

The invisible structures that determine how land is used, governed, acquired, and stewarded are often overlooked, but they’re essential for the success and longevity of any regenerative, place-based project. Our work at ReCommon focuses on these invisible layers related to land to create the right conditions for the longevity and success of any regenerative project that emerges on it.

2. Regen Foundation enDAOment

We’re excited to announce that ReCommon has been invited to join the fourth cohort of Regen Foundation’s enDAOment program! Regen Foundation is the non-profit arm of Regen Network, piloting implementation-level research in community ownership and governance in regenerative finance.

Being an enDAOment recipient means that we’ll be deepening our relationship with Regen Network and its ecosystem of partners. The token allotment gives us governance rights in the network, and the staking yield can be used to fund operations and support projects.

3. Larger Shifts at ReCommon

This has been a pivotal year in our journey at ReCommon, and we’ve grown a lot. The first two years of our organization were focused on research and the development of frameworks and protocols related to bioregional land tenure. This year marked a major shift from research to implementation, reflected in a renewed focus on working with clients.

Ultimately, any systems for land governance, acquisition, and stewardship are only useful if they’re actually applied in the real world—hence our desire to shift from the realm of theory to practice. Influenced by the years of research we had done, we now offer a unique consultation service for any place-based impact project. The integration of digital mapping into our offerings has rounded out our capacity to help projects covering the full spectrum of place-based impact.

4. Refreshed Website

The ReCommon website has received a major update! It had been some time since we updated our site to reflect changes in our organization’s focus and offerings. The goal of this website update is to showcase the foundational shift in our business model—from relying on grants and donations to engaging in paid client work via our consulting services.

We have a lot of exciting work in the pipeline, including open-source maps and other products… so stay tuned for future developments! And be sure to reach out if your project or one you are connected to could benefit from digital impact mapping and whole-systems consulting for land projects.

That's all for this month of ReCommon Reflections. You can reply to this email with any questions, feedback, or just to say hello. We'd love to hear from you. Thanks for reading!

Love & gratitude,
Team ReCommon 💚
